"I picture my epitath: 'Here lies Paul Newman, who died a failure because his eyes turned brown.' "
I am genuinely saddened by the death of Paul Newman, who was partly responsible for my love of films. He delivered an incredible number of wonderful, iconic performances and in addition to his acting career gave much of his time and money to charitable and political causes.
Here are some of his most memorable quotes:
"I am not able to work anymore...at the level I would want to. You start tto lose your memory, you start to lose your confidence, you start to lose your invention. So I think that's pretty much a closed book for me."
"I was always a character actor. I just looked like Little Red Riding Hood."
"I don't like to discuss my marriage, but I will tell you something which may sound corny but which happens to be true: I have steak at home, why should I go out for hamburger."
"The concept that a person who has a lot holds his hands out to someone who has less, or someone who isn't hurting holds his hands out to someone who is, is simply a human trait that has nothing to do with celebrity."
"I have never been able to understand attacks upon the gay community. There are so many human qualities that make up a human being...by the time I get through with all the things that I really admire about people, what they do with their private parts is probably so low on the list that it is irrelevant."
"If you're playing a poker game and you look around the table and can't tell who the sucker is, it's you!"
Rest in peace, Mr Newman.

I was never a big fan of Mr. Newman's until I saw "Absence of Malice" for the first time - then I really saw what a great actor he was. His portrayal of Mike Gallagher was low key but great at the same time. He really made you feel how bad it can be when the media singles someone out and puts their life on display for all to see.
Thanks for visiting my blog and I will be sure to keep an eye on yours too.
There are so many poor role models in the sports and entertainment world. When you think you finally have found a good one, it seems like they usually end up letting you down. Paul Newman never let us down.
I agree with you, Mr. Teacher. Cool Hand Luke was just that: Cool. I posted a tribute to him yesterday, which featured a funny story about my Mom. You should check it out!
He was one of the great ones- when Hollywood was Hollywood. He and his wife were dedicated and humble. They set a positive example of charity and for giving back the gifts that they were fortunate to be blessed with. He will be missed!
His charitable work stretched far. When my youngest son was under-going chemo, his 8 year old brother was having a very hard time. His summer was transformed by spending 10 days at Barrattstown Castle, Eire - set up and paid for by Paul Newman with his sauces. Hundreds of young people with life threatening conditions spend time there doing things their parents would probably forbid (climbing, fishing, kayaking, sleeping out). Occasionally run sibling camps, as those children also find life changed.
The joys of childhood - other nice bits of work used to push him around, singing "Your bro is dying - bury him or burn him?" Nice ....
Oh no, how did I miss the news! I also missed the news of Humphrey Littleton's death. I must get off this rock a bit more! A lovely post, and I share your sadness. I'm here for the first time. Nice, well-written and interesting blog. Glad there are teachers like you out there.
It's a great thing when someone isn't so stuck on their celebrity and themselves that they can help out others in such an amazing way. And he was easy on the eyes ;)
Thanks for sharing your post with Best Posts of the Year!
he was pure class... in all ways.
