This is the short conversation that I had, during a lesson, with one of my Year 8 students on Friday morning:
Student: "Sir, how do you spell "education" ?
Mr Teacher: "You are twelve years old. I realise that I should help you but giving a constructive answer will force me to acknowledge the question, and my patience can't cope with that today."
Student: "Oh, ok. I know it anyway. It must be e-d-u-k-a-c-j-u-n."
I sat at my desk and wept, wondering if he knew how to spell "despair."

Great post!
That's job security. :]
Ok, seriously, some people like me can WRITE the word but not spell it out loud. I would look like a very un-smart person in a spelling bee.
Sometimes... it's just not worth taking it personally. You can work hard, you can work REALLY hard, and it doesn't always sink in.
The good news? He's only 8.
I tell mine everyday (because they never remember) "I don't spell for 6th graders."
Oh dear.....But he's not only 8, he's in Year 8, which means he's 12.Hope you recover - lots about spelling in the news at the moment.
I teach 9 year-olds in the USA, but I feel your pain! I think I have lived that same converstion!
Good Luck to you and your "ed-ja-ma-ka-ted" students!
